I have a lot of projects that I’ve completed. Computer and life problems have prevented me from posting them online. But I will be posting them over the next few week. What can I say? I don’t have a job. So I have plenty of time to knit.

I admit it. I'm a bag junkie. I've been buying up those $1 bags in grocery stores not only for using groceries, but to also store knitting projects. I came across the Monk's Travel Satcheland immediately fell in love.

Of course, I saw all the blank space on it and went about customizing it.

I finished one more project, a wolf based on the Husky in World of Knitted Toys.

I had the hardest time finding safety eyes. I didn't want to spend $5 in postage for a $0.69 part. But every major chain, and a few independent craft store I checked didn't have any. So I ended up having to mail order them anyway. But the wait was worth it. :)

I've survived my sister's wedding and will be heading off to Oahu tomorrow. But first I had to share my find.

Maui Yarns a superwash Merino wool dyed by a local lady. It was bought at The Needlework Shop in Lahaina. It's colorway is called Surfer Boy Blue, and I already have the project in mind for it. She also had a few other colors there - Pineapple Upside Down Cake (yellow gold) and Paradise PInk.

I also have made good progress on a friend's birthday present. I'll be posting pictures of it when I give it to her.

I admit it. I'm relatively new to knitting. I look at things and think, hey I could knit a cozy/warmer/holder for that. I might even think about how to design it. Sometimes they are common things, sometimes not so common.

Never would I have thought of this.

I give you a Snail Warmer, and one made to look like a Christmas Tree.

I would love to know what thought process happens to make you think, "Hmm. That snail looks cold. I'll knit it a little holiday themed sweater." Because I want to be able to do that. It's a combination of 'that's so cute!' and 'WTF?!?' that I adore.

I did the Alien Illusion Scarf for a friend in a variegated color. We got talking about how cold it gets where she lives, and she mentioned how she thought that fingerless mitts rock. I never have done mitts or gloves before, but I found the 220 Fingerless Mitts pattern and gave it a try.

As promised, here are the pictures of the Christmas gifts I knitted. I'm breaking this into several posts because there are so many of them. :)

First up, a TARDIS for a Dr. Who fan. And yes, I've threatened to knit her the matching Dalek. For some reason, she doesn't seem to be taking my threat so seriously

When I came across the pattern, I had no idea that this would be so huge. I knit it on #5 US needles. Here's a few shots with a ruler to give you the idea of the scale. If I do it again, I'm seriously considering doing it on #2 or even #1.

Merry Christmas!

I received two very cool gifts today. I was given some wonderfully soft lavender Baby Alpaca Yarn from The Hunger Site. According to the label, it was made by Inca Tops, and appears to match the description of their Muhu. The skein states a weight of 75 gr., but no yardage. Google is failing me, and I'm not sure exactly what size this yarn is. Anyone know a good way to estimate what the yardage is?

I also got some lovely fair trade Banana Yarn in teal, also from The Hunger Site stores. I'm not sure what I'll make with it, but it does list the yardage. It's an interesting texture, almost papery, so I want to be sure to make something special out of it rather than my standard slippers or scarf knits.

And I haven't forgotten. Pictures of Christmas presents will be coming soon.

Metallicar Illusion Scarf Pattern

I've teased about this for long enough. And here it is. The Metallicar Illusion Scarf Pattern in all it's Supernatural glory. If you do make this pattern, I would love to see pictures of you modeling the scarf. And yes, three are in the process of being made for Eric Kripke, Jensen Ackles, and Jared Padalecki.

For personal use only. Please feel free to modify this pattern, as long as source credit is given.

The pattern is based on the Supernatural Impala Dish Cloth by Concetta Phillipps. Original pattern modified with permission.

Samples pictured below were knitted on US Size 6 needles using Caron One Pound of Yarn (one skein black, one skein white). Approximately half the skeins are used. Finished dimensions are 114” long by 12.5” wide including fringe.

Gauge: 16 stitches and 26 rows per 4 inches

Materials used:
1/2 Skein Caron One Pound of Yarn (Black) or 413 yards of worsted weight yarn of choice
1/2 Skein Caron One Pound of Yarn (White) or 413 yards of worsted weight yarn of choice
#6 US/4mm knitting needles
#F/5 (3.75mm) crochet hook
Blunt eyed needle

Note - Since the colors repeat every two rows, do not cut the yarn when it is time to change color. Carry up the new color behind the strand of the color on the needle. It will form a decorative edge and save you the trouble of weaving in ends. Be careful not to pull too tightly or one side of the scarf will pucker.

Weave in ends using a blunt eyed needle.

For fringe, cut sixty-six 20 inch strands in each color. Starting at the first stitch, attach every other stitch by pulling 3 strands through using a crochet hook.

I've finished my knit Christmas Gifts, with one exception that's going to have to wait. I have a nagging feeling that there will be other people I think of last minute who make me facepalm because I didn't remember them. But I'll have to get them other things instead. Now I can go back to knitting things for me without worrying about deadlines.

Because most of what I was knitting were things I couldn't show in progress pics of, I couldn't post details here. But now as I know friends are opening them, I will post pictures of things as they are finished.

My reward for doing this is to knit myself a Benetar from New Knits on the Block. Because I'm doing it for me and not a child, I'm doubling it's size. Originally I wanted to do a Monk's Travel Satchel, but the yarn I bought was too stretchy for it.

As I get free time, I also intend to be posting my thoughts on working with various yarns and patterns. Plus watch this space for a fandom related pattern to be posted shortly.

I just felted my first felt project today. It was an interesting experience. Because this is a relatively small project, I had to do it by hand instead of tossing it in the washing machine. So I'm scrunching the knitted item in as hot water as I can bear, having let it soaked five minutes first. And I'm thinking the whole time that this isn't working... it's way too big... I'm going to have to come up with some sort of back-up gift.

And then I notice my stiches are starting to disappear.

Okay, another ten minutes and this should be done. I pull it out and check it against what it has to fit around and it's about an inch too big. So I worked about another minute or so on it.

I could almost hear a 'schlooooooop' and I swear the water level dropped an inch.

I pulled it out and fitted it again. Now my thin knitting was nice and thick. And it fit the form nicely. I have to let it dry overnight and I'll see how it comes out. But it looks good so far. Pictures will be posted once it has been gifted.

I hope my other two felting projects go as well tomorrow.

This weekend I went to The Alternative Press Expo to meet some of my favorite webcomic authors - Bill Holbrook of Kevin and Kell, Jennie Breeden of The Devil's Panties and Geebas on Parade, of Alina Pete of Weregeek, Shaenon Garrity of Narbonic and Skin Horse, and David Malki of Wondermark.

And while there, it was the perfect chance to wear my new R2D2 Beanie. It was completed on the 29th, but sadly we had no trick-or-treaters for me to show it off to on Halloween.

I had about five people ask to take my picture. It's funny when the cartoonist you're there to meet is squeeing over you as much as you are squeeing over them.

Christmas Gift #1 is coming along well. I can't post pictures since it will give away who it's intended for. I'm ready to start #2 of 7 gifts. And that number will probably increase as I get inspired.

I've finished two bags this week. One of them is Mary's Summer Bag, which I rechristened my Schlepping Bag since I'll be using it to schlep around my books and knitting supplies. I'm happy with how it turned out over all, but I would hesitate before making the large bag again. Maybe I'd do one in the small version

The other one is a little bag I'll probably use for storing dice or small knitting knicknacks. It's based off the Cthulhu Dice Bag pattern, and I did it to stash bust and teach myself how to use double pointed needles to knit in the round. I'll knit a second one with the Great Old One later on probably.

Because I never seem to be able to have less than four projects going at one time, I have started Mary's Large Summer Bag. This is my first project that I've a) worked in the round, b) used a lace like pattern for, c) knitted using 2 strands, and d) had to pick up stitches on. In retrospect, I should have used an easier pattern.

But I'm forging on, and completed the second set of the pattern. I just wish I could figure out why I'm dropping stitches so I can prevent it. I've knitted about 9 sets of the pattern backwards by now undoing my mistakes

Wolf Ears and Tail

I'm doing some prep for going to Dragon*Con, and was thinking how I'd like a little pouch to go around my neck. Nothing too big or fancy - just big enough to put some cash, a credit card, and a room key in so I don't have to schlep my purse around. I'll be schlepping enough books for autographs. I could use a hip pack, but they make me nervous about pickpockets for some reason. I could put it in my pockets, but I have a tendency to drop things rummaging for other things, and my phone has a nasty habit of demagnetizing any card in next to it.

Then I realized, hey, I could knit me a little pouch. It would only take a few hours, would use up leftover yarn I have, and be something to keep me busy. Came up with a pattern and have knitted it. Just need to do the cord and figure out the closing. And if I leave off the cord, they will be perfect for reusable wrappings for gift cards, coin pouches, and so on. I'm still fine tuning the pattern, so I'll post it once I figure out the exact dimensions for the cord.

Then I realized, you know, it would be rude to show up and not have a few of these to give to my friends that I'm going with...

So here I am, knitting frantically away on a last minute project I told myself I wouldn't be doing.

Wings Are Complete!

I got the wings finished. Whee!

Unfortunately the strength of the wire doesn’t let me mold them like I want, but they aren’t laying flat against my back either.

Winged Frustration

I’m finishing off the Allete Wings, and I’m having difficulties. I tripled the wire and used 16 gauge instead of 18. The wings are still floppy, just like I was afraid of. So I don’t think I’m going to be able to wear them back like I wanted. instead I’m going to see about getting a thin dowel so they will hold out stiffly straight across my back.

As nice as they are, I’m not a big fan of browser based journal entry interfaces. There’s been too many times I’ve been a fumblefingers and have closed the window midway through a long entry. So feel free to ignore this post while I play with MacJournal’s capabilities.

I finished the ears. When I have a chance, I'll post a picture of me modeling them. Right now you'll just have to use your imagination. But here's what they look like.

I also have added more to the Metallicar Illusion Scarf. There are now 7 cars in it. I'm going to measure at 12 completed, and decide if it should be longer or not.

My cat Xena had to check out the quality of the work.

Don't worry, it passed inspection.

And I have started a scarf for my uncle. Actually, he's my mom's cousin, but for some reason, I was taught to call him uncle. It's based off the Mudflap Girl pattern that can be found in Stitch 'N Bitch Nation

All in all, not bad output for a week.

They realized they were being observed in turn and cloaked themselves.

Why did the aliens leave? Because Dean and Sam came by in the Metallicar.

And here's what the scarf looks like from the hidden angle.

One wing, so I can only fly around in circles. The pattern isn't really visible both due to the camera and the fact that it's harder to see using the chenille yarn.

And here's both wings. They still need to be blocked so they won't be so curly and have the armature added so they will be stiff on the shoulders.

No, this isn't a black, fuzzy banana. It's the completed wolf's tail. As soon as I can find a good set of mirrors or someone to take a picture, I'll post me wearing it.

I've been busy, and my fingers are feeling it.

I have four projects at the no longer knitting stage. The wolf ears need to be attached to a headband. I'm still looking for a suitable one (I wish the padded kind were still in style), but I think I'll have to make a trip to the craft store for one I saw designed to be decorated. The tail is stuffed, armature added, but I need to sew it off and get some sort of chain so it can connect to the belt loops of jeans. The wings are knitted, need to be blocked and the wire frame sewn in. And the green alien scarf needs to be blocked and fringed (still).

Projects updates

I have begun making a pair of Allete Wings yesterday. As of right now, I have one wing done. This pattern has been an exercise in frustration because I changed the yarn over to Lion Brand's Chenille Thick 'n Quick solid in black, but didn't change the size of the needles. So I've had to be super careful with accidentally adding and dropping stitches. But I like how the wings are coming out. The feathers have a velvety feel, and their pattern is subtle. I'm putting this project on high priority so I can have it done for Dragon*Con.

The ears and tail are coming along. The tail is folded in half and sewn, and just needs to be stuffed. I'm debating on adding an armature so it curves slightly instead of hanging straight. It would also add some support for the belt hook. The ears need to be sewn together and attached to the headband. I'm still determining the best way to do that.

The Alien Illusion Scarf I'm doing on commission now has two heads done. It's not as time critical at the moment, though I do want to finish it since I have two other scarves in the pipeline that need to be done. I will pick that one up as soon as I have the wings done.

And my Metallicar Illusion Scarf is also coming along. Two cars are done, and I'm trying to decide how long I want it to be. I have a feeling it's when I feel I've reached the end, I cast off and fringe it. Once I'm certain there's no changes I want to make to the pattern, I will be posting it here.

I have two other illusion scarves I'm working up a pattern for. One is for my mom's cousin based on the Mud Flap Girl Tank found in Stich 'n Bitch Nation. The other one is a cat pattern that I'm working up and have to test.

All in all, I've been productive.

A Trouble of Tribbles

I ended up up with a lot of left over yarn from various scarf projects. And I'm just a sucker for the feel of eyelash and fur style yarns. They're the perfect thing for making up tribbles, and they also replicate almost as fast as the originals.

Dragon*Con Costume - Wolf Ears and Tail

I bought a tail last year at Dragon*Con, but wasn't able to get a pair of ears. I've been looking at some online, but can't find the ones I like when I actually had some money to spend on them. Then two weekends ago I came to the brilliant realization that I can knit a set. I came across some funfur with a metallic glitter and started knitting.

Of course, if I'm making a set of ears, I need a matching tail. Or at least one that will match better than the one I bought.:)

The ears will be sewn together and slipped over a wire frame attached to a headband. The tail needs an additional few inches knitted on for the belt loop. It will be folded over, stuffed, and a wire inserted to give it a slight curve.

I now have six heads done on the Alien Illusion Scarf I'm working on. Now all that remains is to block it and add the fringe. I'm happy with my progress on it. Pictures will be posted in the next day or so.

Gator Scarf

Pattern: Morehouse Farm's Alligator Scarf

This was made for my cousin's adopted daughter, who is two years old. Her room is decorated in monkeys, and I figured she needed an alligator to keep them from taking over. ;)

It was done on #5 needles and used 2 skeins of Red Heart Super Saver in Banana Berry. I wasn't sure how the variegated yarn would make up, but I think it's lovely.
